Apple Reports 6% Increase in Revenue, Expects More Delays on Advanced Siri Rollout

Apple Inc. reported $49 billion in iPhone revenue in the fourth quarter, up 6% from the previous September, reflecting revolutionary technological advancements in the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models.

The new iPhones models incorporate Artificial Intelligence specific to Apple products, known as Apple Intelligence, which was initially released in 2024 as part of the iOS 18.1 updates. It was previously only compatible with the iPhone 15 pro and iPhone 16. Its capabilities include writing tools, image generation and advanced photo editing.

Apple’s virtual assistant Siri launched in 2011 and has undergone major changes since then to mirror the advancements of AI. In 2024, CEO Tim Cook announced plans to release a new and improved Siri in the following year. This year, he made a similar announcement.

“We’re also excited for a more personalized Siri. We’re making good progress on it, and, as we’ve shared, we expect to release it next year.”

Siri was first introduced in Apple’s iPhone 4s in October, 2011 and was one of the first available virtual assistants on a smartphone. In January, 2012, Apple reported the highest quarterly earnings and revenue ever for the quarter ending on December 31st, 2011, following the release of Siri. The company reported 128% unit growth from the previous year’s quarter.

At the time, Siri was revolutionary. Today, consumers hope for drastic improvements.

“Apple thought Siri's capabilities would grow, but that didn't really materialize; Siri kind of atrophied out of the gate," said Chris Harrison, director of the Future Interfaces Group at Carnegie Mellon, Wired reported.

Apple Intelligence has already provided significant improvements to the Apple experience. It allows for live translation between languages, can summarize a long email into bullet points and allows customized notifications when users want to stay focused. While these tasks reflect the hunger for convenience in tech, there is still a hunger for personalization.

Historically, users have reported frustration with Siri. It sometimes misunderstands commands or is unable to perform tasks on certain apps. Additionally, Siri cannot answer detailed questions.

Users are opting for ChatGPT to answer questions within seconds. Apple has since integrated ChatGPT into Siri’s programming to provide a more personalized assistant. (Although Elon Musk’s xAI sued Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of monopolistic practices, Reuters reported).

In order for Apple to maintain Siri as a personal and authentic Apple product, the company has to keep up with the pace of ChatGPT and OpenAI’s rapid growth and machine learning.

ChatGPT can’t set a timer for five minutes like Siri can, or perform phone functions, which distinguishes Siri from its competitors. However, ChaptGPT can provide more detail and understand commands in ways that would put Siri in danger of retirement if Apple cannot meet the growing demand for a more useful Siri.
